After six long years, Brianna Chapman is finally able to cope with witnessing the murder of her parents.
Then, dead animals start showing up on her doorstep, her tires are slashed and her yard is scorched by an unexplained fire.

But Brianna refuses to reopen her parent’s six-year-old arson-murder cold case, along with all the old wounds.

As Nathan’s and Brianna’s lives and passions intertwine, Nathan discovers a painful truth. Brianna’s parents weren’t the arsonist’s target. Brianna was.

And the killer is back to finish the job.

I so looked forward to reading this book … though I’ve done things a bit backwards and read book two first, it made me desperate to grab this one.  Honestly, it didn’t matter the order, except I wish I’d gotten to know the characters in this book before I read the next one.  The author has a wonderful way with words and I really enjoy reading her work.

I fell madly in love with the hero of this story, Nathan, who’s nearly perfect — don’t worry, he has a flaw or two to keep him human, but he’s smart, sexy, thoughtful and caring.  He’s “dad” to his orphaned nephews, loves his goofy dog and sometimes it seemed he was  out to save the world.  I think he could have.

Did I mention he’s also patient? He’d have to be to put up with our heroine, Brie.  She’s NOT perfect. She’s independent to a fault (which a couple of times nearly put her in the TSTL column with me), cranky, and uptight.  Her life hasn’t been all rosy, so much of it is understandable, and when we see how she behaves with kids, dogs and friends, we realize there is a redeemable human being with a good heart underneath all that frustrating behavior.  My difficulty liking her, at least at the start, is the biggest reason this wasn’t a solid five star book.

The plot is pretty darn solid.  Lots of suspects, plenty of red herrings and I was honestly surprised by “who dunnit”.  Can’t complain a bit about that!

I’m still an R. T. Wolfe fangirl and can’t wait to read the next book in this series.  If you’re a fan of romantic suspense, you should pick up this book and the next.  I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.  I know I wasn’t!

  2. Oh I SOOO agree! RT Wolfe’s books are addictive. I love them while I’m reading them and miss them when I’m done. Fortunately, she keeps writing so I always have new material to read! Thanks for the review and congrats, RT.

  3. Dian Nealey says

The first and second books in this trilogy were incredible. But I have read the third, Dark Vengeance, and it is exponentially incredible. If I could do nothing but read this author’s books on a regular basis, my life would be complete.
I appreciate the way RT researches her material so thoroughly. When I complete one of her books, I am so enthralled, but I have also learned something or gotten information about a social issue. (Also why I loved Boston Legal and love The Good Wife).

  4. I have Black Creek Burning and Flying in Shadows on my Kindle. I can’t wait to read them! Much continued success, R.T., and thanks to Poppy for an excellent review. Happy New Year!

  5. Great review! Now I want to read it more than ever! I love suspense plots with lots of red herring.

    Happy New Year!

    Thanks,
    Erin

  6. I really enjoyed Black Creek Burning. I have to pick up the next two because I agree with reviewer, Nathan is my favorite kind of hero. I always love books with a great hero so it would be very nice to revisit him.

  7. I have the best readers. Thank you, ladies.
While Nathan most certainly is a strong presence in book 2, Flying in Shadows, his nephew, Andy, is the main male character. Book 3, Dark Vengeance, is Duncan’s story. In fact, I wasn’t ready to say good-bye to any of the Reed Family. A short story linking the Black Creek Series to the splinter Nickie Savage Series was published in November. Savage Deception, Nickie Savage Series Book 1, was published this month. That’s 5 books in one year. I’m going to take a day off. 🙂
