Jack returned from Korea as a young renegade who might love his cheap paperbacks but who also loves showing off his leather jacket in the lavender bars. He never would have predicted that dealing with the boys from Vice would depend more on Mr. Cooley the bookseller, and their unexpected binding, than playing the tough guy.

It’s the mid-50s and Jack finds himself continually coming back to the pub Toppers, regardless of the whispers of it being a dodgy place, run by gangsters and the hang out of gay men. Being  inclined that way himself, Jack finds himself more curious than worried. Caught up in an unexpected police raid though, and Jack finds himself seeking sanctuary in one of the many local bookstores. Mr. Cooley helps Jack divert the police, and they’re both surprised to find not only to they work well as a team, but also have a shared interests in the classics.

This is a fun, lighthearted quick story. The sex is alluded to, but not in your face, and there is a lot more focus and interest in the growing attraction between Cooley and Jack. Heavy on the character interaction this is a wonderful read and a good insight into two men becoming friends as well as lovers. Highly enjoyable.
