Parris McCall, owner of the dive bar, The Alibi, has finally constructed a life where her little quirks don’t show or matter to anyone. As for her grandmother’s warnings that she’s different, well, she’ll cross that bridge if she comes to it.

But when Ty walks into her bar, both lives are instantly changed.

He’s a powerful human lawyer by day and the Magic Council’s rogue witch hunter by night. But after he agrees to substitute on his secretary’s dart team, all hell breaks loose. Now Ty has to help Parris admit who she is before her long-lost relatives kill her.

Ty is a lawyer and is only filling in on the dart team play-offs because one of the members is sick. Once he steps in the pub, he realizes that his other job is going to be required here. He knows there is a rogue witch in the premises.

Ms. Cahoon has created a world where the Magic Council regulates witches and has members of their council as hunters to bring in any unregistered witches. Her two main characters are Ty, a member of the council and Parris, a woman who knows she’s different, but doesn’t know she is a witch. She also adds in one more twist to the story that doesn’t become known until later.

Ty is hoping Parris’s witch strength is not strong enough to require registration. Parris just knows he’s a hunk and she wants to see more of him. He’s attracted to her, too, and he can’t be. And that’s just the beginning of their troubles.

This has the potential to be a very good series. There is suspense, the threat of death, traitors and spies, and regular life to deal with. It’s an intriguing story line and the author’s word flow smoothly. I enjoyed this read but felt the author should have written a bit more before ending this part of the story. It read more like an introduction than a complete novella. That’s partly influenced by the ending. The author gives you enough information to go on with the story and she ends it with a cliff-hanger. That’s an acceptable technique, but I would have preferred to see her take it just a bit farther and show the “viper” nestled in Ty’s office as they return to regular life.

I can guarantee you that you will want to read the next in this series. The author surprised me when she pointed out the traitor. I had no clue. Think you’ll know? Get a copy and see!
