With nothing left from her childhood except a tiny portrait of a beautiful woman, some skill with a needle, and the knowledge of a dreadful secret, Philomena escapes her tormentor, Joseph, and the dank fogs of Victorian London, only for a train crash to interrupt her quest for independence and freedom.

Trapped between the upstairs and downstairs occupants of the great country house, Philomena hears whispers of the mysteries and lies that lurk in empty corridors and behind closed doors. Her rescuer, the dangerous, enigmatic Hugh, Lord Thatcham, wrestles with his own demons and makes Philomena’s heart race, but she must fight her passion for she can never marry.

Haunted by her past, Philomena’s only hope of happiness is to confront the evil forces that threaten to destroy her.

Philomena has a secret (a shock to this reader). It overshadows her every effort and decision. Moreover, at the death of her kind, caring guardian, she becomes a target for his ne’er-do-well son. Disguised and without much planning, she runs. The train she’s on from London to Bristol wrecks. At the wreck, Philomena and Lord Thatcham’s lives become entangled with the reader immersed in it all. I felt as if I were there feeling the tensions, the suspense, the uneasiness, and the inching in of love that seems to be hopeless.

Lord Thatcham, a widower with a four-year-old son, takes his responsibilities and his position as a peer of the realm seriously. He sees and understands change as the business and trades people in the country gain wealth and power. He is not a snob like his mother, but he does feel his importance and authority.

He does not intimidate Philomena though. At one point she tells him he is bad-tempered, proud, and thinks others are beneath him. She stands toe to toe with him and speaks her mind, offer her opinions, wins the heart of the precocious four-year-old John, and gains the respect of the servants at the Thatcham estate. She and his sister Selena become friends, but the mother is another thing altogether. Her devious, underhanded ways really do rev up one’s blood pressure.

There is an undercurrent of what really happened to the late Lady Thatcham and her connection with the hated neighbor Arthur Muldron. The coincidence that involves how Muldron came to own the estate next to Thatcham House and how he knows Philomena may be a little bit of the stretch, but the story is so good and so compelling, I couldn’t stop reading until I knew all about it.

What seems like an impossible situation that brings everything to the climax leaves precious little wiggle room for Lord Thatcham and Philomena to have a chance at a happy-ever-after. There are some tense times as two antagonists conspire against Philomena in order to secure their own place in society.

Frances Evesham slips the reader into a time of rapid change in England, uses light and dark character traits, light and dark places, and love that will not be denied to create a page-turning story.

Kate has a bad reputation. Since her pa’s murder, she’s been a whip-wielding, ball-busting hellcat, determined to prove she can run a ranch just as well as any man. Then her little sister goes and hires a new foreman—a foreman who makes Kate tingle in places she shouldn’t be tingling, not if she wants to keep up a tough façade. When Jake takes liberties by kissing her—never mind where he kisses her—she clocks him in the chin then hopes he’ll kiss her some more. What’s happening to her?

Jake isn’t just at the ranch to help run the place. He made a bet he could tame Kate, a bet that would give him the money he needs for his own piece of land. He never expected her to be so ornery…or taste so sweet. And he never expected to like her more when she’s cantankerous. Unfortunately, it’s a bet he can’t afford to lose, even though he’s already lost his heart.

Notorious Woman is the third book in the Desert Heat trilogy. It is a fabulous story and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I adored the heroine of this story. Finally, a story that featured a woman who could stand up for herself. Kate was a hell raising wildcat. That gal had a whip and she wasn’t afraid to use it. She’s been running her ranch since her pa got gunned down with a bullet in his back. Unfortunately, her stubborn streak had earned her a reputation that begged for trouble. Known for being the orneriest woman in Tucson…trouble always seemed to find Kate.

It is not levitra generika 40mg only vital to the formation and maintenance of human life. She was tough and she was fearless. She stood her ground…. even if she was shaking in her boots. She was loyal to her sister and her pa, and she really loved the land she was fighting to hold. So with all that affinity for Kate, it was gonna be a long hard ride before Jake would earn my affection.

Arrogant man that he was, Jake took a bet that he could tame Kate. Ha! He would have her purring like a kitten for the sum of two thousand dollars. More than enough to buy him his own piece of land ,where he’d settle down with a sweet little woman and have a bunch of little buckaroos. He took that bet and got himself hired on as foreman at Kate’s ranch. Then the fireworks began.

I loved everything about this book. The plot was engaging and the story flowed easily. Very character driven…and yes, Jake did succeed in winning my heart. But it took him a while because of his arrogance. I felt a lot of empathy for Kate each time she cringed because she knew people were pitying her. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt that much emotion about a character in a story. It’s a rare thing and I thank the writer for giving me such a strong heroine to identify with. Yes, I wanted to slap Jake for deceiving Kate the way he did. But he helped her and gave her something that she hadn’t even realized she was missing. A helpmate and a strong shoulder to lean on. And he recognized that even a wildcat has a softer side. He proved that he was the man for the job. Instead of taming the wildcat, he got lassoed instead. Ha! I knew Kate was the woman for that job. That is how he won my heart.

The story had some interesting secondary characters as well. I felt that Kate’s little sister Jolie was very immature and downright disloyal in the bargain. Running up debts when Kate was barely keeping a roof over their heads. Scolding Kate when she stood up for herself. Carrying on an affair with someone her sister distrusted. A big slap in the face when she invited their mother to the wedding even though she knew Kate wanted nothing to do with the woman. And what did Kate do when confronted with these betrayals ? She swallowed her angry words for her sister’s sake. Personally, I thought she should have pulled out that bullwhip and gave them all a taste of her temper. I’m just saying….

Now for the dirty part. There were plenty of steamy love scenes between Kate and Jake. Their chemistry together sizzled right from the beginning. I don’t know how Kate kept from fanning herself as Jake displayed his wares at that first meeting. He’d just seen her unleash that infamous temper and it turned him on. He knew he was tempting her and he knew she was interested. And the loveplay kept on getting hotter each time those two got together.

I liked the ending although it was a little abrupt. Especially endearing was the difficult choice Jake had to make at the end. In the end they both had to throw away their stubborn pride and that was what made the story so sweet.

Notorious Woman is wildly romantic. It is a fantastic western romance that made me take a second look at this author. And now I simply must read the first two books that I somehow overlooked. My bad….I’ll get on that right away. If you enjoy reading about a woman that can stand up for herself, who’s fearless and independent….then this is the book for you. Kate was a hard one to tame and I wasn’t quite sure who did the wrangling. But it sure was one entertaining ride.

Notorious Woman
is one book that you do not want to miss.

The UK is Christmas Crackers

It wouldn’t be Christmas in the UK without these little cardboard tubes of joy decorating the festive dinner table. We Brits pull a world beating 154,000,000 of them each year – yep – that’s 154 million.

Invented by the sweet maker, Tom Smith, in the early 1840’s, the tissue-wrapped tube contained candy in the form of sugared almonds and a love motto. They did not sell well. Then, while watching the crackling logs on his fire in 1861, inspiration struck and the cracker, as we know and love it today, was born.

The candy was replaced by a small gift, the motto rewritten as a riddle or groan inducing corny joke and the explosive ‘snap’ added. Rebranded as ‘Bangs of Expectation’ the new format was an immediate success and has remained a firm favourite ever since, although we had to wait until 1869 for our paper crowns, when they were added to the contents by Tom’s son, Walter.

Modern day crackers, while containing the same range of contents, come in a huge price range depending on how valuable the gifts are inside. A supermarket budget box, containing a small plastic novelty, will set you back £2.99, while at the other end of the scale, a box of 6 from the Royal Mint are priced at an eye-watering £5,000, but then they do contain a diamond and 18ct gold necklace amongst other items of solid gold.

So, with all my good wishes for a jolly, snap, banging time – Happy Christmas, Everyone!t

Whenever a friend of mine dropped for a quick visit, it was always a nice surprise. Having Natalie for dinner was no different. She was a lovely woman, always doing her best to make everyone around her happy and comfortable. I thought she was even more beautiful on the inside than she was on the outside, and that was hard to top. With blonde hair, sky-blue eyes, and a smile so bright, she had a way of making people happy to comply with whatever she asked. But tonight, her charming smile didn’t illuminate her face. If I really thought about it, her smile hadn’t been the same for a while. Now I understood why.

“Why would you say that, Nat?” I couldn’t understand what she’d just told me.

“Because it’s true, Kassie.” Her shoulders fell as she exhaled what she believed was true. “I know it’s hard to believe. I couldn’t believe it myself, but I reached the point where there’s no denying it anymore. He’s definitely having an affair.”

She seemed so heartbroken. Her wide eyes glanced around the house as if she were lost, apparently finding it difficult to concentrate on any given point. She slouched as if in defeat, her hair seemed dull pulled back in a painful ponytail, but most of all, her sad smile seemed forced, so out of place on her face. She seemed so lonely sitting on my kitchen counter stool, regardless of whether or not if Josh and I were there with her. When did this happen? Why didn’t I notice before? I quickly moved to her side and held her in a tender hug with no idea what to say. I didn’t want to believe that Andrik could possibly put her through that. He was always so protective of her, looking after her every need. He was hands down the most decent man I’d ever met.

There had to be some sort of mistake.

“Natalie, do you think you could’ve made a mistake?” Josh sat next to us by the kitchen counter. He and I had been about to have one of our in-home dinner dates when Natalie showed up at our place. Naturally, we invited her to join us. What we didn’t count on was the bitter aftertaste her news had left in both our mouths. “Andrik would never cheat on you.”

Natalie and Andrik had always been the most stable couple out of my group of friends. They weren’t the first to get married—that had been Denise and Clay—but they’d been next in line. It had surprised us all a little when Nat decided to marry a man so many years her senior; Andrik was actually her mother’s age. But everything about them had always been so natural, so organic. They seemed to belong to one another from very beginning of their relationship. I wasn’t any more ready to see that change.

“I wish that were true, Josh,” she told him. “But I’m positive that’s what’s happening.” Her voice trembled with emotion, her eyes red, and her hand felt clammy and cold in mine.

“That makes no sense,” Josh insisted. “He’d never do something like that.”

She laughed a little, more as a defense mechanism than humor, and it came out lifeless and sad. Staring at the dark marble of our counter, she traced the intrinsic pattern with her fingers. “How can you be so sure, Josh? You don’t know him that well.”

“I know him enough,” Josh answered with certainty. He leaned over the counter, holding himself up with his arms and hovering too close for Natalie’s comfort. “He’s crazy about you. He would never do something to hurt you.”

“Well, he sure is hurting me right now.” Natalie had never liked confrontation, and Josh’s questioning certainly didn’t seem to help. She held herself in a protective hug, her eyes now fixated on our floor as she avoided eye contact with either one of us.

Sometimes even the strongest and most capable women need a hand and when a sexy as sin sheriff’s deputy appears, it’s awfully hard to say no. Especially when danger comes knocking at her door, putting them all at risk.

This is an action packed romance.

The characters, especially Cara, is not one that I see everyday. Cara is not a damsel in distress just waiting for someone to come and save her. She is an independent woman who has served in war beside her friends–friends who have become a family over time. Though she is self-sufficient, she knows when to ask for help because she knows her friends have her back. When Cara becomes a target, I saw how these group of friends came together to protect her, and in turn unveiled a dangerous liability that could get all of them and a little girl killed.

There are multiple plots and the author has made sure that readers won’t get bored or get lost trying to keep track of what is happening. Joe and Cara’s first meeting was probably seeing her at her worst. In time they got to know each other well.

I would recommend to all readers to start from the first book to fully understand Catching Cara as there is one minor plot that started with the first book, which is still continuing. Though if readers want to read this one as a stand alone, they absolutely can.

A sweet but sexy read consisting of a witch with a sweet tooth and a cowboy looking for his missing sister–how can this go wrong?  Together the cowboy and witch bring the best out if each other. I loved reading every moment of it.

Rebecca is a baker and witch who starts to fall for the cowboy who enters into into her life looking for his sister.

Now Rebecca is a sweet and kind woman who loves helping people even if it may hurt her–I could completely relate to her because haven’t we all had someone we’ve cared about even though we know it could end in disaster? I loved how Rebecca came into her own–it didn’t hurt that the cowboy Dru Tanner happens along about that time, too. This is a kind if damsel in distress trope, except Rebecca is an independent woman and she can take care of herself. She’s the type of person who will be there with her friends through the thick and thin, but she’s not afraid to give her blunt version of advice at the same time. Her sassiness drew me in. I wanted to know more about her and I couldn’t help but root for her. She felt real and I liked that. Now add in Dru and it’s a great story. The passionate chemistry between Dru and Rebecca was perfect.

There was little mystery and comedy in the basic plot. These elements enhanced the story. I laughed, cried and smiled a lot while reading this book. If that was the author’s plan–to make me go through the gamut of emotions, then she hit the mark.

I have to admit, the first couple of pages started out a little rough. I think the main reason could be either the tenses or the POV, but don’t let that discourage you. It took me some time to get into the rhythm of the story, but it was well worth holding on. I”m glad I did.

This is a book for a reader with a sweet taste and love a touch if mystery, paranormal and comedy in their books. Recommended.

Not fun and not conducive to getting back into the air. Most pilots are all about flying. It’s not a hobby, it’s a way of life. So for Drake to not only not have his wings, but to not have the girl he loves… he’s a wreck.

I love the way the suit contours to the body. Utilitarian and sexy to look at. The suit keeps him safe while bringing attention to strategic parts of his anatomy. Yes, I went there. Grin. He’s eye-catching.

Speaking of catches, the catch in this story is big. They’ve only got one night to figure out how to get their relationship back on track. Tough job. Are they up to the challenge? Will the man in the flight suit be a good reason to get her to come back?

You’ll have to read One More Night and find out. Grin. Here’s some more info on the book:

“You bring out the bad girl in me. I forgot how much I liked it.”

If he shoved her panties to the side, she’d let him grope her there in the reception room. He resisted the urge to go too far and moved her dress to repair her modesty. “You’re good at being bad.” With the pads of his fingers, he stroked down the length of her leg and caressed her ankle. The crimson polish on her toes glittered in the fluorescent light. “You always did like bare feet.”

Her voice dropped to the husky purr he hadn’t heard in a long time. “My stilettos pinched my toes. Bare is more comfortable.”

“I’m glad you came back.” The old feelings welled in his brain, reminding him how he hadn’t stopped loving her. Ever. “You aren’t the same girl who walked out of here three years ago. Not really. I want to discover all the ways you’ve grown.”

“You’ve changed, too.” The husky tone of her voice trailed up his spine. Jenna traced the line of his lapel with her finger. “More poetic, less gruff. And you shaved.” For the first time since she’d set foot on the tarmac, she smiled. “I like the changes. They work on you.” She murmured in his ear, “I wouldn’t have stopped you if you kept going.”

Kyle likes being alone on Submission Island. The only exceptions are the other three Doms with whom he owns the place and the women who pay to play with them. He certainly doesn’t want a whole movie crew filming on his island home. So when bossy Teresa comes to scout the location, he’s not happy about her presence. Even though she is easy on the eyes.

Teresa doesn’t know what to make of Kyle. He’s blunt. He’s an unabashed sexual sadist. He doesn’t know how to compromise. She’s an independent woman who is used to getting her way with men. But curiosity drives her to see what sex with a Dominant is like. She discovers she has more of a taste for his kinky games than she ever expected, and soon she’s aching for his rope, his whips and his kisses.

Submission Island is a beautiful place and Kyle prefers to be there alone except when women pay to play on the island. So he’s a bit annoyed when he has to host a movie scout during his alone time, but Teresa is very attractive if a bit bossy.

Kyle is a sexual sadist and Teresa is used to being in charge in her relationships, watching these two learn about each other was a real treat. Teresa easily gives in and learns to love giving Kyle what he wants. While Kyle is a sexual sadist, he’s not one of those super scary Doms, he is definitely sadist light.

The story revolves around their sexual relationship and the scenes were off the charts. There is also a story line full of mystery that I think the author does a beautiful job of interlacing into Kyle and Teresa’s relationship.

I can definitely recommend this as a stand-alone story, and a trip to Submission Island is highly recommended to fans of BDSM love stories.
